Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is an advanced orthodontic treatment system. Instead of using brackets, wires, and rubber bands to straighten your teeth, it utilizes clear aligner trays made from SmartTrack®. SmartTrack is a thermoplastic that’s free of all allergens, making it ideal for almost anyone, including pregnant women and those with sensitivities.

Invisalign aligners transform your smile in a discreet and convenient manner. You can also remove them while eating, taking pictures, brushing your teeth, or playing sports.

What issues can Invisalign correct?

Dr. Kelly typically recommends Invisalign treatment for people with mild to moderate orthodontic issues, including:

  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • A misaligned jaw
  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Overbite

You might also benefit from Invisalign treatment if you have small gaps between two or more teeth.

How does Invisalign treatment work?

Invisalign treatment begins with a comprehensive consultation at Choice Dental. During your appointment, Dr. Kelly conducts an oral exam, asks about your goals for treatment, and takes digital impressions of your teeth. He uploads your impressions into a software program that helps him design a custom orthodontics treatment plan.

After mapping the step-by-step movements of your teeth, Dr. Kelly sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your first set of aligners. A week or two later, you return to the office and try them on. To ensure a positive outcome, it’s important to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours each day.

Every two to three weeks, you return to Choice Dental and change into a new set. After putting on a new set of aligners, it’s normal to experience some mild discomfort, but this should subside in a day or two. If necessary, you can take over-the-counter pain medication to ease your symptoms.

When can I stop wearing my Invisalign aligners?

The length of time you’ll need to wear your Invisalign aligners depends on the severity of the issues addressed and your goals for treatment. Most people achieve their desired results within 6-12 months, but it may take longer. To speed up the process, follow Dr. Kelly’s instructions carefully, and attend all follow-up appointments.

After completing Invisalign treatment, you wear a retainer for about a year. A retainer is a custom oral appliance that prevents your teeth from regressing to their original position.
